the mountains between the park and the Parkway
Tiny Hot Springs, North
Carolina, sits on the French Broad River in the northern mountains
between Great Smoky Mountains National Park
and the Blue Ridge Parkway near the
Tennessee border northwest of Asheville. This remote town is surrounded
by National Forests and is one of the few civilized stops
along the Appalachian Trail. This section of the Appalachian Mountains
is seldom explored. To the south, the
mountains along the state borders lie within Great Smoky Mountains
National Park. To the north, they reach their greatest heights.
This is pure rural mountain country
with few towns, narrow pastoral valleys, and places that exist now
only as names on maps.
Enjoy
beautiful mountain and river views, discover historic
towns, and challenge yourself to some
of the twistiest roads to be found anywhere. The map includes
the best approaches to Hot Springs from Lake Junaluska, NC,
and US 23A on some of the most scenic and
enjoyable rides over the mountains and through the woods
and valleys. Old barns, homestead cabins, mountain farms, and pastoral
creeks line the roadways with significant portions through National
Forest lands in North Carolina and Tennessee. Most
travelers miss these fabulous rides as they are focused on
getting to Deals Gap or Smoky Mountains National Park - your missing
some real gems. The tiny town of Hot Springs swells with local motorcyclists
on the weekend all here to enjoy the fantastic
riding laid out on this map. I've thrown in a few roads many
of these locals have yet to discover.
