Guide to more specific maps of your favorite areas
This
map was developed for the merchants, restaurants, and lodgers of
Maggie Valley, North Carolina, the hub of great motorcycle riding
in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Unlike my other maps, it is limited to only the 5 most popular classic
routes, though there is enough great riding here to fill a week
long visit to the area.
These are the routes chosen by local riders as the most outstanding
in the area, rides which every visitor should experience, the rides
locals enjoy over and over again.
75
Miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway:
The 75 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway included on this map include
the highest and most scenic portion of the 469 mile park. This section
from the southern terminus at Cherokee to just west of Asheville,
NC, is chock full of sweeping overlooks, tunnels, and the highest
elevations found on the entire roadway.
Tail
of the Dragon and Hellbender 28:
Notorious,
if not infamous, the Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap is one of our
most popular destinations for the motorcycle traveler. The most
scenic route through Cherokee and Bryson City will lead you to the
Dragon via the Hellbender 28. It's a must-do ride!
Thunder
Road:
This loop ride
takes you through scenic Nantahala Gorge along the whitewater river,
then climbs over Wayah Bald on Thunder Road (a.k.a. Wayah Road).
Enjoy the numerous roadside waterfalls in the Cullasaja Gorge, then
return to Maggie Valley via the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's a full
day that will fill your camera as well as your spirit.
Hot
Springs:
The mountains
do not end at the border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park!
Instead, they continue to build and climb to reach the highest peaks
east of the Mississippi north of Asheville. The ride through them
to Hot Springs is one of the lesser known local treasures with scenic
valleys, tumbling creeks, and the soothing hot springs near the
Tennessee border.
The
Devil's Triangle:
The
heart of this loop ride is the imposing rocky outcrop of the Devil's
Courthouse looming above the Blue Ridge Parkway. Climb the twisting
roads from the valleys flanking the parkway to enjoy the scenic
views from up high and the roadside waterfalls along the way through
the verdant Pisgah National Forest. Everyone will love this ride!
Guide
to more specific maps:
As you discover each area, find pictures of the more detailed maps
of each which reveal hundreds more miles of fabulous riding in that
area. These maps will lead you to the lesser known roads full of
hidden treasures and secret back ways to skirt around towns, discover
sights most others miss, and allow you to focus on your favorite
regions.
