- The
most complete coverage of the region
The Appalachian Mountains
reach their greatest heights to the south, subside a bit through
this region, then regain height further north. Don't
be quick to dismiss this area though, what they lack in height is
made up in breadth and the rolling hillsides hold a surprising
wealth of great two lane back roads which weave through it. Many
of these roads intersect the Blue Ridge Parkway. They then extend
into the surrounding contryside in a fantastic network of great
rides, more than 40 of which are detailed on this map.
No other map of the region details as many great roads as this one.
I've
been nearly overhwlemed with the number of fun and challenging roads
I discovered here, I never expected it. The best routes are
highlighted in red and though no specific loop rides are identified,
many of these roads intersect and the options
to make loops are many and easy to identify. Good connector
roads which are highlighted in blue - these roads almost made the
best of the best grade, but either lacked the scenery of the best
rides or the challenging and fun curves and turns of a great road.
These blue roads are roads I recommend over more traveled main arteries,
good options when weekend or holiday traffic
clogs the main roads, and great ways to link together the
best (red) roads and make short cuts between them, detour around
towns, and avoid traffic.
Scope:
This map completes
the coverage of the great roads of North Carolina and opens the
door to the fabulous riding which lies to the north in Virginia.
In following the highest ridge lines of the
mountains, more than 100 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway takes a
course more east- west than it's otherwise north-south path to connect
the higher elevations found above and bleow this region. There
are no major cities on this map, the vast majority of the surroundings
are rural and pastoral countryside that's a pleasure to enjoy.
