The Appalachian Mountains
start to regain their height as you move north from the rolling
hills found near the southern Virginia / North Carolina border.
The mountains here are distinctly separated by long valleys and
the roads which run these valleys make for some spectacular rides.
Few
paved roads intersect the Blue Ridge Parkway through this region.
The best routes are highlighted in red and these are the
roads worth detouring off the Blue Ridge Parkway to ride or making
a trip just to enjoy them on their own.
There are also a wealth
of good connector roads on this map. These are great rides on a
cruiser which didn't make the top grade due to traffic load or a
lack of consistent scenery or challenging curves. Only the best
get to be highlighted in red, but don't discount these others. They'll
help you link to the others.
Scope:
This map comprises
our coverage of the great roads of central mountains in Virginia
and is complimented by maps north and south which give complete
coverage of the Blue Ridge Parkway in this state. The
highest ridge lines of the mountains are traced by 90 miles of the
Blue Ridge Parkway which skirts the southern and eastern
side of the city of Roanoke. Find great roads within the urban landscape
and how to make the quickest or most enjoyable excursions to those
which lie nearby.
